having experienced broken hearts, and the healing, we are open to seeing the synchronicities in life

we were sitting on the plane as we flew to minneapolis, and brian was listening to the music on his phone. he has hundreds and hundreds of songs, and loves to play them on shuffle.  he tapped me on the shoulder, took out his right ear piece and had me listen to this beautiful song while the left ear piece was in his ear:

The Story

All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I’ve been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don’t mean anything
When you’ve got no one to tell them to
It’s true: I was made for you

I climbed across the mountain tops
Swam all across the ocean blue
I crossed all the lines, and I broke all the rules
But, baby, I broke them all for you
Because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
You do
I was made for you

You see the smile that’s on my mouth
It’s hiding the words that don’t come out
And all of my friends who think that I’m blessed
They don’t know my head is a mess
No, they don’t know who I really am
And they don’t know what
I’ve been through like you do
And I was made for you

All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I’ve been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don’t mean anything
When you’ve got no one to tell them to
It’s true: I was made for you
It’s true: I was made for you

we sat there listening with tears in our eyes and then the next song came up:

I Won’t Give Up

When I look into your eyes
It’s like watching the night sky
Or a beautiful sunrise
There’s so much they hold
And just like them old stars
I see that you’ve come so far
To be right where you are
How old is your soul?

Well I won’t give up on us, even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love, I’m still looking up

And when you’re needing your space, to do some navigating
I’ll be here patiently waiting, to see what you find

‘Cause even the stars they burn
Some even fall to the earth
We’ve got a lot to learn
God knows we’re worth it
No, I won’t give up

I don’t wanna be someone who walks away so easily
I’m here to stay and make the difference that I can make
Our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use
The tools and gifts we got yeah, we got a lot at stake
And in the end, you’re still my friend at least we did intend
For us to work we didn’t break, we didn’t burn
We had to learn how to bend without the world caving in
I had to learn what I’ve got, and what I’m not and who I am

I won’t give up on us, even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love
I’m still looking up, still looking up.

I won’t give up on us (no I’m not giving up)
God knows I’m tough enough (I am tough, I am loved)
We’ve got a lot to learn (we’re alive, we are loved)
God knows we’re worth it (and we’re worth it)

I won’t give up on us, even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love, I’m still looking up

by now the tears were streaming down my face and then came his favorite song:

Simple Man

Mama told me when I was young
“Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this it’ll help you some sunny day”

“Oh, take your time, don’t live too fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
You’ll find a woman and you’ll find love
And don’t forget, son, there is someone up above”

“And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won’t you do this for me, son, if you can”

Forget your lust for the rich man’s gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied”

“And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won’t you do this for me, son, if you can”

Oh yes, I will

“Boy, don’t you worry, you’ll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied”

“And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won’t you do this for me, son, if you can”

Baby, be a simple, really simple man
Oh, be something you love and understand

as crazy as it may sound, these three songs played in that order one after the other, told brian’s story.  how he had so many stories in his head from the past, with no one to share them with, how he had to learn who he is, and what he’s not and that he’s worth a lot, and finally to follow his heart to find himself, and to know that it’s not the gold and material things that define him, but his soul.
we sat there holding each other, sharing his headphones, sobbing.
well, i was sobbing, while he had tears in his eyes.
maybe there was a day when we wouldn’t have noticed the words to these three songs, and maybe they would simply have been tunes in the background as we traveled. but now that we’ve experienced pain, lessons and healing, we definitely notice the synchronicities in life, and when we do, we are most often moved to tears.

  1. I love the hidden messages that are all around us waiting for us to be ready enough, open enough and searching enough to find them. Knowing that others taste of these times and crave for me helps me see hope. Thank you
