all four children are home for christmas! merry merry christmas! oh the joy of family!…as i soak up all the love, the laughter, the memories, the traditions i am filled with total and complete bliss!
my parents are spending christmas with my brother and his family. i think about how they must feel being welcomed into their home, and being surrounded by their grandchildren. i’m so grateful they are getting to be with family, and not spending it alone in the village.
we have riki’s boyfriend’s parents visiting from south carolina and we’re starting new traditions. scott’s dad’s birthday is today! and we’ve added chocolate cake to the dessert menu! we’ll be celebrating gary as part of our blessings. how lucky we are to have such a wonderful family joining ours.
this year we’re planning a family trip, and giving the gift of travel – to machu pichu!, so brian and i aren’t giving actual gifts. i find myself wondering if this too will be a new tradition of ours.
as i look at our tree, our adult children have taken over the gift giving, and i see beautifully wrapped packages adorning our tree. I remember those all nighters, and brian and i wrapping furiously – slapping on those stick on bows, and instant labels that say t0- and from -santa! i never found the time to wrap with pretty ribbon and nice notes. and here ren and riki have found the time! our tree has never been so blessed. it’s beautiful! i can see and feel the love they’ve put into wrapping each gift.
we started our cooking yesterday, and it was that same kind of feeling of contribution and creation that warms me. i get it. what makes the food so yummy is all that love that goes in it.
it’s food and family that’s soaked and drenched in love, all mushed up together that makes christmas so special.
the joy of giving and receiving, the memories we share, and the new ones we’re creating. each day’s a new day, each year’s a new year, a new beginning mixed with the old…as we change, so do our traditions. our family expands and i happily add eric and scott stockings onto our mantel. maybe one day we’ll be back at wrapping for little ones…and signing labels that say, love, santa. i can’t wait. hehe.
