“life and love are the same”

IMG_3910at the wedding my father played stevie wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” under the olive tree.  and we cried.

Isn’t she lovely? Life and love are the same

Isn’t she lovely? Isn’t she wonderful?
Isn’t she precious? Less than one minute old
I never thought through love
We’d be making one as lovely as she
But isn’t she lovely made from love?

Isn’t she pretty? Truly the Angel’s best
Boy, I’m so happy, we have been Heaven blessed
I can’t believe what God has done
Through us He’s given life to one
But isn’t she lovely made from love?

in the old days everyone had answering machines…remember those?  and brian had put on our answering machine our favorite stevie wonder song.  so when ren was putting together her dream wedding, she asked her grandfather (gpa is what the kids call him) if he could play that song on his harmonica.  he said ‘yes, of course!’, having no clue what the song was, or how to play it.

he  plays by ear, is self taught, and has been asked to play in concerts, memorial services, and by the fireside just sitting around.  he’s famous in the senior village where he and my mom live, maybe as famous as stevie wonder himself…the women adore him!  song requests include, ‘i left my heart in san francisco’, ‘bicycle built for two’, ‘getting to know you’, ‘love is in the air’…you get the picture…think frank sinatra…

this was the first time being asked to play a contemporary song.  he practiced for months.  listening to youtube, and trying his best to understand the song.  ‘this is not an easy song,’ he told ren, after losing several nights sleep.  she reassured him and said, ‘keep it short and simple, gpa’, lifting any worry from his mind, and soon he was finding sleep.

but of course we hadn’t thought about how emotional the wedding was going to be, so when young chih invited him to come up and play, gpa struggled to find his breath between the tears, and that explains why he kept his sunglasses on!  there was a moment where i could tell he wanted to speak and tell her how much he loved her, but he knew if he tried, he’d fall apart crying, so instead he put the harmonica to his lips, and expressed his love through his song, played from the heart and simply let the tears flow.

life and love are the same…

i love this song, but perhaps those words are my favorite.  for without love, what would life be?  and as eric and ren said their vows, we witnessed the love between two, begin a life together as one in heart.

That’s so very lovely, made from love
